Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as I’m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Georgia Dress with a gathered skirt

Georgia Dress with a gathered skirt

I wasn't quite finished with the Elizabeth Suzann Georgia yet, and made a dress version with a gathered skirt. It's not my finest work! The fabric is some  slinky viscose I got from the free fabric table at the recent sewing day we had. I think Liz who brought it might have got it from a destash herself. I'm not really used to sewing with this kind of fabric, so that probably contributed to my problems.

I stupidly decided to leave the bodice the same length as the top. I attached the gathered sections before sewing the side seams together to make it easier to add in seam pockets. When I did sew them together I ended up with this questionable drop waist situation - excuse the rubbish mirror selfie I didn’t plan to put this in the post, but I think it’ll be helpful to see what I mean. I guess a combination between it being too long in the first place, and the weight of the skirt pulling the loose fabric even further down.

I did briefly consider just leaving it like that but what's the point of adding pockets if you can't reach them and my sewing chat agreed that it would look better shorter.

I was worried I would have to redo the gathering from scratch but I managed to cut above the gather and attach the already gathered skirt to the then shortened bodice. I shortened the bodice by 15cms which it turns out was ever so slightly too much. It's really hard to get the waist to be in the right place, and it's now a bit too baby dolly for what I wanted.

The other thing is that I'm pretty sure I've ended up with both a wonky waist and a wonky hem, partly just the fabric being a pain to cut and partly freestyle cutting off the skirt portion before reattaching.

All of that being said, I do actually really like this dress, it's fun and floaty and it made something wearable out of otherwise unwanted fabric

Not much point for the usual format after having written all of that, but here’s the factual points in the usual

Pattern: Elizabeth Suzann Georgia with a gathered rectangle skirt. Plus in seam pocket pieces from the bob pants.

Size: one size. For the skirt, I halved the fabric I had left over after cutting the bodice pieces and gathered using the full width of the fabric.

Fabric: mystery slinky fabric, by guess it's viscose. I didn't measure but reckon there was about 2.5 metres
