Grainline Moss skirt
For some reason that I can't fully explain I recently fancied making a mini skirt with a zip fly recently. I asked around and the Grainline Moss skirt was exactly what I had in mind.
I'd never made a zip fly before, and it's something I've always felt I should be able to do, and a skirt seemed a good way to practice. I found the whole experience quite mind boggling, it took me an entire morning and many messages to the group chat just to do the fly. I am 98% sure there is a mistake in the instructions - it tells you to put the overlocked edge of the fly shield opposite where it's meant to be. It's correct in the sew along pictures! I only worked out what to do in the end by having a detailed look at the fly on some rtw jeans and consulting the fly instructions for the Closet Core Ginger jeans. They are pretty different but it made me understand what was meant to happen.
Anyway, I got there in the end, and very proud of myself I was too! The rest of the instructions were fine thankfully.
I've always struggled with having such a difference between my waist and hips when I was younger and skinnier, but recently I've been perfectly proportionate in size charts, as was the case here. So I thought the skirt should fit me without alterations.
Alas, this was not to be, once I'd finished the waistband was huge and the hips were tight. Boo! I've realised this is because of my extremely sticky outy bum.
I ended up unpicking the side seams and making them as small as they could be. I could not be arsed with unpicking the entire waistband, so I just added a dart right through everything including the waistband in the centre back. 7cms taken out! I don't think the dart is quite right (it adds tio the sticky outyness), but it does its job and this is definitely wearable (and comfortable) now.
Looks ok from the back
I think if I make another I would need to start from a smaller size and do a full seat adjustment, but it's not straightforward because of the back yoke. Currently I cannot face figuring it out!
The fabric is some dry waxed cotton I won at a raffle one time. It's not that waxy, and it's pretty ideal for this, it's sturdy but not too heavy. I did break a needle sewing down the emergency dart through the waistband, but that was though 6 layers of fabric, which was only because of the extra dart
